Last week, we met 10 passengers who were trying to make their way across enemy lines, and back to safety in France. We had the rich count and countess. There was also the manufacturer and his wife, M and Mme Carre-Lamadon. We also had the money-minded wine merchants, M and Mme Loiseau. Two penurious nuns, the boisterous democrat Cornudet, and the spunky courtesan nicknamed Ball-of-Fat made up the rest of the party. In last week’s episode, we saw the courtesan Ball-of-Fat, or Boule de Suif, share her provisions with all of the party, when there were no other food stuffs to be had during their long journey. They made quite a party of it all. They arrived finally at the halfway point, a ramshackle inn at Totes. And after a lively dinner, they all went to bed.

And now, “Boule de Suif, or Ball-of-Fat, Part 2 of 2”, by Guy de Maupassant
