If you are looking at a top-notch way to expand your audiobook library of the classics, becoming a supporting member is seriously a great way to go. Each of the monthly coupon codes is good for one year since the time it is issued. And so, if you’re going on a trip and you need a great audiobook, you can get many of our longer titles for free using your coupons. Some are a few dollars over 8 dollars, but many are under. For instance, one supporter went and picked up Captain Blood, Huckleberry Finn and Wuthering Heights using her coupon codes, and the cost of it all was only 5 dollars after using her coupon codes.

On top of the codes, you also get a 3-4 hour-long portion of a new audiobook. This month we finish up 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Next month we begin Jane Austen’s Emma.

And you help to keep The Classic Tales Podcast going strong.

And you get all this for $5/month. Thank you so much for stepping up and showing your support.

In today’s story, the palanquin mentioned might be a little confusing. At least, it confused me when I first read this story. It’s an enclosed litter borne on the shoulders of men by means of poles. It can also be simply lifted enough to miss the ground – like the conveyance of the Witch of the Waste in Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle.

Also, the Grand Galerie des Glaces is a special room where guests would often go and partake of ice cream and other cool refreshment. Glaces is “ice cream” in French. The Phantom of the Opera’s Opera House in Paris also has a Galerie des Glaces. But I can’t see the phantom digging in to some sherbet, though.

And now, The Room in the Dragon Volant, Part 3 of 5, by Sheridan LeFanu.

The Enchiridion for the month of November is the final of four installments of Jules Verne’s classic, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The final installment is nearly 5 hours long. Supporting members get access to the monthly Enchiridion, which is a 3-4 hour-long portion of a new audiobook title, as well as an $8 credit for anything in the store. It only costs $5 a month to become a supporting member. Your monthly support really helps us keep The Classic Tales going strong, and it really is a great value. Thank you for your support.

The next story we will be tackling in the Enchiridion will be Emma, by Jane Austen. So if you’ve been on the fence about becoming a supporter, now is a great time to join. Austen’s seminal novel about matchmaking is one of her finest, and supporting listeners can hear the Classic Tales version first.

Today’s story is by Joseph Sheridan LeFanu, who was one of the great pioneers of the gothic novel and short story. He is likely best known for his novella, Carmilla, which spotlighted female vampirism. His short stories are very rich in the gothic tradition, and his novel Uncle Silas is also very satisfying.

In today’s portion of the tale, we meet our narrator and hero, Robert Beckett, who is a wealthy young Englishman who is travelling to Paris right after the battle of Waterloo. We also meet some of the main characters of the story. By the way, Dragon Volant in this instance means “Flying Dragon”.
