I’m performing as Ebenezer Scrooge at Payson Community Theatre’s production of Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol right now. Fun fact – Austin Bateman, the actor in the show who plays Young Scrooge, is a fan of the podcast. He’s done a great job interpreting how a younger BJ Harrison would sound as Scrooge. My son Seven picked up on what he was doing and complimented him on it. It’s a great show. If you’re in the area, there are three more performances.
Today’s VINTAGE episode was recorded in 2018, when my son was Scrooge in high school. I thought it was time to revisit the story. There’s a reason it’s a classic!

Today’s story is considered one of the great short stories of English literature. Appearing as the final tale in his short story collection, Dubliners, James Joyce builds the complex atmosphere of a Holiday dance in Dublin.
One thing to look out for is how the point of view of the narrative changes constantly, almost like it’s a living thing. The use of phrasing is also noteworthy, sometimes sharp and staccato, and sometimes smooth and flowing. It’s as though the language itself has a tempo, texture, and pitch all its own. As though the story were a musical piece in and of itself. Hopefully this becomes even clearer in an audio format. I hope you like it.

The 39 Steps introduces John Buchan’s dashing adventurer Richard Hannay, who went on star in four more novels. It’s one of the earliest instances of a “man-on-the-run” adventure, now a commonly used trope in action and adventure.
It’s been adapted into many films and plays over the years, and was included in BBC’s 2003 Big Read poll as one of Britain’s “best-loved books”.

Today’s episode also comprises the first 3 chapters of the book The Insidious Dr. Fu-Manchu. The first of the Fu-Manchu series. It was originally published as The Zayat Kiss in Colliers Magazine in February 1913.
The characters of Nayland Smith, Petrie and Fu Manchu crossed over into the comic world in 1931 in a black and white daily. Nayland Smith made his first appearance in Detective Comics in Detective Comics #17 (DC). Marvel later acquired the rights to the characters, and in the 1970s developed a kung fu television series around the unknown son of Fu Manchu: Shang-Chi. Masters of Kung Fu was cancelled in 1983, and the Rohmer characters haven’t been seen at Marvel since, but Shang-Chi has, eventually headlining his own installment into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2021: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Let’s journey back to where it all began.

We had a great event at FanX last week – we filled the room! People were turned away for lack of seating. This rarely happens. It was such a fun performance, and so fun to be in character and in costume. I had a little front row cheering section, with a bunch of my kids and their significant others who came. It was so neat to see them there.
We have five Fridays this October! Perfect for this incredible classic from the great William Hope Hodgson. First published in 1908, this installment to the genre of classic horror is legendary. H.P. Lovecraft and Terry Pratchett have both praised it at length. It’s kind of obvious that it helped them see what could be done, and inspire them to reach for the next level. But oh boy, what a level Mr. Hodgson established. I hope you like it.

Today’s story inspired a film starring Charleton Heston called Marabunta. I worked on a movie of the week with the same premise back in 1998. I was the set decorator. I was 23. The movie was so bad, you can’t even find it now.

If you’re going to the FanX convention in Salt Lake City on Saturday, you can see me twice, if you like. Three other narrators and I will be in a panel on audiobooks. We will also do a live performance of Agatha Christie’s short mystery: The Mystery of Marsden Manor. I’ll be there not only in person, but in costume as Hercule Poirot, a la the 1982 version of Evil Under the Sun, with Peter Ustinov as Poirot. If you come, please say hi!
You can listen to The Mystery of Marsden Manor and the full collection of Agatha Christie’s short stories: Poirot Investigates in the Mystery category at the website at classictalesaudiobooks.com. Or, if you have the Audiobook Library Card, it’s in the Mystery category there, as well.

One thing I wanted to mention as our Blackbeard story starts to wind down. When Blackbeard made his last stand, and the author mentions that he wouldn’t die, he’s not kidding. When Maynard examined Blackbeard’s body, he discovered that he was shot in five different places and had been stabbed or otherwise cut twenty times. Just a little gruesome detail for you.
Also, and so I guess this is the second thing, the captains of the ships in this story really existed. Stede Bonnet was a pirate known for his high code of conduct. Lieutenant Maynard was the one who swore to take down Blackbeard, and had a final duel with him. Ned Rackham is likely an embellishment of Calico Jack Rackham, who may have sailed with Blackbeard, but certainly knew him. Feel free to dive down any rabbit holes you need to double check.

Elmer Brown Mason is largely forgotten today, save for aficionados of pulp magazines. His great contribution to the genre of adventure fiction is his five-story series about Wandering Smith. Isaiah Ezekiel, “Wandering” Smith can usually be found at Pere Guerrin’s, a rough hang out in New Orleans. His job is to help anyone “who wants to go after something unusual in a strange place”.

I was so excited when I found today’s story. Ralph Delahaye Paine was a journalist and novelist who flourished in the early 1900s. He attracted the attention of William Randolph Hearst when he covered the Cuban War for Independence from 1895-98. He continued as a war correspondent until 1903, when he retired from journalism and focused on writing history and fiction.
Blackbeard: Buccaneer tells a tale of Edward Teach, the famous pirate known as Blackbeard. Paine uses fictional characters to weave the tale together, but the details around Blackbeard himself are pretty reliable.

Brian Oswald Patrick Donn-Byrne, who lived from 20 November 1889 – 18 June 1928 was an Irish writer. A fair amount of his career was in America, but in his later years, his financial straits forced him and his wife Dorothea to return to Ireland.
The pacing and prose of today’s story really called to me. The gentle stream of consciousness pacing of a man’s mind when his wife has died, and his contemplations really seemed appropriate for this time of year.

I recently finished recording the latest audiobook from Dean Koontz. Now he’s a pretty famous suspense writer, but with his latest book, Going Home in the Dark, it’s actually a comedy. He’s told me that in the past when he’s tried something like this, the publisher’s would push back. They just didn’t get it – that it was supposed to be funny. But Dean heard my audition and thought I’d get where he was going. He thinks I’ve done a “bang-up job” with it. He describes me as someone “who knows funny – and how not to oversell it”.
So, to honor this good news, we have a P.G. Wodehouse story from the short story collection The Man with Two Left Feet.

Agatha Christie has sold over 100 million books. Her works have been translated into over 100 languages. She was a nurse and later an apothecary’s assistant in World War I, where she gained her knowledge of poisons.
Today’s story first appeared in the September 1922 issue of The Home: An Australian Quarterly. It was likely written when Christie was in Australia during her Grand Tour, having recently left South Africa, where she set the story. After the first World War, an ex-German soldier who has taken to being a paid political agitator flees for his life after some political work near Johannesburg.

Edward Frederic Benson is often mentioned in the same breath as M.R. James and William Hope Hodgson, and holds a distinct place as one of the great writers of supernatural fiction in the Edwardian period. Today’s story is one of his finest.
Benson plays with the connection between dreams and reality, and builds the tension through the device of a recurring dream, with a progression of time that mirrors reality.
As with last week’s story, I was getting vibes from the original Twilight Zone when I read this one. I hope you like it.

While many have heard of E.F. Benson, the early 20th century writer of weird fiction, many readers may not know that he was one of three brothers – all of whom wrote some stellar supernatural stories around the Edwardian period. Edward Frederic (E.F.), Robert Hugh (R.H.), and Arthur Christopher (A.C.) wrote over 150 books between them. Many of them stellar stories of suspense in their own right.
When I discovered today’s story, I felt like I was reading an episode of the original Twilight Zone. I hope you like it.

A shot rings out, waking the household. A man stumbles out the front door followed by a dowdy woman with a revolver who shoots him again and again. W. Somerset Maugham, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

Today’s story was originally written in 1922, appearing in a collection of stories that came from Maugham’s travels in the Malay provinces. The racism in the story can be hard on the modern ear, but reflects the views of the time. Maugham uses racism as a literary device to fuel the tension in the story, to show the prejudices of the British toward the people they are exploiting. It also demonstrates how the native people in the region resent the British. So, if you’re feeling a bit uncomfortable, it’s by design.
This is one of Maugham’s most famous short stories, and the 1940 Bette Davis film is an excellent adaptation.

I think one of the reasons I love Guy de Maupassant’s writing so much is that his taste seems to be like mine. I’m no master of the short story like he is, but when you start a Maupassant story, you never know where it will take you. It could be vampires, mental illness, or a story about the unfair plight of women with an effective and seemingly effortless denouement.
Today’s story is one of his most famous, and often anthologized. I hope you like it.

There is a little more course language in this story than in our usual fare, and as with nearly all detective novels of the time, it’s got its share of homophobia and misogyny. Take the time to pause the show and point it out to your kids.

G.K. Chesterton’s seminal creation of Father Brown is second only to Sherlock Holmes when it comes to British sleuths. His station gets him into all sorts of places closed to others, and makes him privy to many unusual conversations. I hope you like today’s story from the collection: The Innocence of Father Brown.

The writing duo of Emile Erckmann and Louis Alexandre Chatrian has produced some of the most chilling and influential supernatural fiction in the genre. At the height of their success, they were known as “The Twins”. Their work was quite well known in England, and M.R. James and H.P. Lovecraft have both spoken highly of the duo’s weird fiction.
And now, “The Invisible Eye”, by Erckmann-Chatrian.

Spade and Archer get hired to tail a shady guy named Floyd Thursby… and one of the greatest detective novels begins. Dashiell Hammett, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

The Boston Globe said, “Dashiell Hammett is a master of the detective novel, yes, but also one hell of a writer.” The London Times Literary Supplement said, “The Maltese Falcon is not only probably the best detective story we have ever read, it is an exceedingly well written novel.”. I am inclined to agree.
The characters are economically written, yes. But Hammett also pauses to set the stage and create a dynamic ambiance in a masterful way. The way he describes Spade’s apartment, or the breeze through the window blowing the cigarette ash on his desk. There are many elements of brilliance with this book, and I’m so excited it’s entered the public domain.
There is a little more foul language in this story than in our usual fare, and as with nearly all detective novels of the time, it’s got its share of homophobia and misogyny. Take the time to pause the show and point it out to your kids.
And now, The Maltese Falcon, Part 1 of 8, by Dashiell Hammett.
