Legends tell of a hidden, exotic civilization entirely populated with women. Three overly confident, and overly masculine, explorers plan to discover and overtake the land – because they’re men, so, it should be easy, right? Charlotte Perkins Gilman, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

Today we begin a series of Herland, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Most famous for her short story, “The Yellow Wallpaper”, Charlotte Perkins Gilman was abandoned by her father when she was an infant. She was raised by her mother and her three famous aunts: Catherine Beecher, Isabella Beecher Hooker, and Harriet Beecher Stowe.

I am a fan of the lost civilization genre, in case you haven’t noticed. And when I discovered this story about a lost civilization completely inhabited by women, and that it was a satire, I was thrilled. It’s kind of the other side of Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, which also tries to not take itself too seriously. I hope you like it.

And now, Herland, Part 1 of 6, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
