Mr. Darcy defends himself from the accusations of Elizabeth, and each revelation is more shocking than the last. Jane Austen, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of our new monthly subscribers. Thank you for stepping up to the plate and supporting us every month. For your monthly donation of $5, you will get a monthly credit for $8 off anything in the online store at www.thebestaudiobooks.com, PLUS access to the new line of audiobooks: The Enchiridion.

Enchiridion is a Greek word meaning literally, “that which is held in the hand”, usually containing guidelines for healthy living. Many ancient writers wrote Enchiridions, the most notable probably that of Epictetus. Fans of the cartoon series Adventure Time will recognize the term as the special book of Adventure, revealing everything a hero needs to know. The Classic Tales Enchiridion falls somewhere in between.

All of our financial supporters will receive, starting in March, a four hour segment of an audiobook, usually leaning toward the Adventure genre. The first is Haggard’s Allan Quatermain, the sequel to King Solomon’s Mines. Other titles in the Enchiridion will be Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, London’s The Sea Wolf, Sabatini’s Scaramouche and many more. It’s like getting a free gift every month. I’m sure you’re going to love it. But it’s only available to supporters of the podcast, so step up and become a supporting member today. Again, thank you for your support.

You may have noticed that there has been a dearth of new audiobooks appearing through the website. The last one that was produced for the website was A Study in Scarlet, which came out last May. The reason for this lag is that I can no longer afford to produce these “bonus” audiobooks out of my own pocket. You see, every episode of The Classic Tales Podcast is downloaded or streamed over 16,000 times in the course of a month. Yet, I have just over 300 monthly financial subscribers. This is great, and it pays the podcast and website bills and a little more, but it’s far from the funding required to produce a new audiobook every month.

Now, I would rather go forward than go back. If we get more supporting members, we can produce more Classic Tales. So I’d like to offer you more incentive to become a monthly supporter of The Classic Tales. Starting in March, there will be a new 4 hour-long portion of a new audiobook that will be available to subscribers only, in addition to The Classic Tales Podcast. This line of additional subscribers-only content will be called the Enchiridion. Every month, subscribers will get an email with a link to approximately 4 hours of additional Classic Tales content. What titles will be available through The Enchiridion? We will start with Alan Quatermain, the sequel to King Solomon’s Mines. From there, we have an entire catalogue of fantastic titles in the queue, including London’s The Sea Wolf, Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Sabatini’s Scaramouche and many, many more.

And so now, if you become a monthly supporter, not only do you ensure the future of The Classic Tales Podcast,          but also you get a monthly coupon code AND 4 hours of a new audiobook – every month. And if enough people become supporters, we can do the longer titles again!

I wanted to do something special as we begin Season 11 of The Classic Tales Podcast. And so, I’ve decided to do an unabridged episodic production of Jane Austen’s seminal work: Pride and Prejudice. I have had several requests for Austen’s novels over the years, and I really cannot put her work aside any longer. While she is not the absolute epitome of high classical fiction, (and I’m not completely sure if anyone is), her work holds a distinctive place in the canon of what is typically understood as classic literature. Her characters are sparkling, her prose style is rich and musical, and the plots, though largely character driven, move like gangbusters.

And so, while there are many, many wonderful audiobook productions of this work, I wanted to see what I could make of Austen’s remarkable and sumptuous text. I hope you enjoy it.

What could me more outlandish than a blind detective? Max Carrados is the creation of Ernest Bramah, and appeared alongside Sherlock Holmes in the Strand magazine when Carrados was first brought to life in 1914.

George Orwell wrote that, together with those of Conan Doyle and R. Austin Freeman, Max Carrados and The Eyes of Max Carrados "are the only detective stories since Poe that are worth re-reading."

So, how is it that someone can be blind and yet be an amazing detective? Bramah sets the groundwork for his blind detective in this, the first Max Carrados mystery.

This marks the 500th episode of The Classic Tales Podcast. Since we began back in 2007, we have visited the worlds of Tom Sawyer, Frankenstein, Edgar Allan Poe, The Arabian Nights, and many others. We have also delved into the wonders of the short story with O. Henry, Guy de Maupassant, H.G. Wells and more. But some of my favorite episodes are the ones that are, to me at least, the lesser-known tales. We’ve been able to explore the ancient roman world of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, the complex fantasy of Ambrose Bierce’s The Monk and the Hangmans’ Daughter, and the dashing adventures of Arséne Lupin just to name a few. So here’s to 500 episodes, and here’s to 500 more.

The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus was first published in 1908. In it, Baum creates a mythological world in which the magical forest of Burzee , created at the beginning of time, is the main source of all other worldly magical power. Ak, the Master Woodsman rules the forests; Kern, the Master Husbandman of the World, rules the food crops; Bo, the Master Mariner of the World, rules the seas. All other immortals are subject to these three. Baum also created Ryls as guardians of the flowers and Knooks as guardians of the animals of the world. He first introduced Ryls and Knooks in his collection of short stories, American Fairy Tales. In The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, his mythology is more fleshed out, comprising a rich enchanted world, which also includes the more traditional nymphs, guardians of the trees and fairies, guardians of humans.

Later, when Baum’s creation of Oz became his main focus, he placed all of his fantastical realms around Oz, yet designated that the forest of Burzee was the source of the magic of Oz itself.

Now, I know that the definition of autism has been evolving since 1908 until what it is today, but I think that the hero of today’s story is on what is now considered the autism spectrum. My reasons for saying this? 1) His method of study is unorthodox, and requires an incredible amount of tenacity, even fixation. Most people couldn’t do this. This is what I term the autism super power. 2) His unwillingness to vary his study schedule of the Encyclopedia (He won’t skip a volume). 3) He imagines a fantasy scheme where his problems are all solved, and works diligently to accomplish this impossible task. 4) He is rather socially awkward, bless him.

This is no way official, and I can’t back it up with anything other than my own observations, but when I read this story, it struck me how my autistic son has many of these same character traits. He also demonstrates the autism super power, and is a truly amazing boy. I find it encouraging that P.G. Wodehouse saw how characters of this temperament could find happiness and love in a world that largely misunderstands them.

A lost traveler discovers a desolate, deserted house in the middle of nowhere. What mysteries haunt the large, abandoned building, and why does it suddenly burst into flames? Vincent O’Sullivan, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

The author of today’s tale, Vincent O’Sullivan, is most likely unfamiliar to you, though he attended Oxford and moved in opulent literary circles. He was born to a wealthy family in New York City, and moved to England to complete his education. He was beginning to create a name for himself as a significant writer of supernatural fiction, and was a member of the Aesthetic Movement, a progressive literary circle composed of many literary luminaries among which was one Oscar Wilde. O’Sullivan used his fortune to help friends, most notably Wilde after his release from prison. His means were eventually completely dissipated. There was a strong negative response to O’Sullivan’s aiding Wilde in his need, resulting in a largely closed market for O’Sullivan’s writings. He was reduced to dire poverty late in life, and died in a pauper’s ward in Paris in 1940.

Of his friend, Oscar Wilde wrote that he is, “really very pleasant, for one who treats life from the standpoint of the tomb.”

Today’s story is by Francis Marion Crawford, who was an American expatriate known during his lifetime as a writer of historical romances. However, he occasionally dabbled in supernatural fiction. Today we conclude our story of The Monk and the Hangman’s Daughter, by Ambrose Bierce. Ambrosius concludes his quest to reconcile his forbidden romantic feelings for the hangman’s daughter.

I am particularly enjoying the Alpine setting of this story, and the way that the mountains can alternate between being haunted by demons and phantoms, and at other times show traces of a gentle, divine Creator. Of course, because we see the mountains through the mind of Ambrosius, the nature of the wilderness fluctuates according to how he is feeling.

As our story comes to its tragic conclusion, let us consider where we fit in to the narrative. Do we see ourselves as Ambrosius, confused and tormented by things we don’t understand, yet driven to somehow find harmony in the chaos?

Or are we Benedicta, the hangman’s daughter? Destined to live the life of an outcast. Perpetually marginalized and shunned because of her station in life – a station she earned by simply being born.

Or are we the clergy, or governing rulers of the tale?

Or are we those who just fit in?

I feel as though the author may be saying that when anyone, but especially a governing body, holds a prejudiced conviction that some of their people are to be vilified and shunned, it is divisive and destructive.

But only to the shunned.

So I guess the real question is, why should those who are not shunned care?

Let’s talk about our monk, Ambrosius. Ambrosius is experiencing something called cognitive dissonance. Leon Festinger introduced this theory in 1957. He suggested that we have an inner drive to hold all our attitudes and beliefs in harmony and avoid disharmony, or dissonance.

For example, when people smoke, and they know that smoking causes cancer and disease. Their behavior (smoking) clashes with their cognition, or what they know to be true (the fact that smoking is harmful to them). The discomfort caused by the cognition, or belief, motivates behavior to be brought into greater harmony with the cognition. (I know this is bad for me- I should stop).

When Ambrosius sees how his superiors shamefully mistreat Benedicta in today’s episode, he experiences cognitive dissonance. All of his experiences as a youth and a monk have given him many evidences of the goodness of his high-demand religion. He loves it. But when he sees Benedicta suffer at the hands of his superiors, he is motivated to somehow find mental harmony.

Would this conflict occur if young Ambrosius were not in love with Benedicta? Who knows? But his feelings certainly make the dissonance stronger. He’s been trying to reconcile his feelings for her all along, considering them a divine mission, a holy sign and token to protect her, etc.. They have to be anything but romantic love, for that is forbidden, and he is very, very devout. He shouldn’t have these feelings. But he does. It is this process of his quest for harmony that leads him to eventually resolve the cognitive dissonance by going to a very dark place, indeed.

A knot of monks happens upon a gallows in the middle of a dark forest. Hanging from the gallows is a fresh corpse, and underneath the dangling wretch a young woman performs a haunting dance. Ambrose Bierce, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

After our long and exciting summer run of Tarzan, I wanted to do something a bit more subtle and literary before we jump into the horrors of October. Ambrose Bierce is most famous for his story An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. However, many consider The Monk and the Hangman’s Daughter to be his real masterpiece. First published serially in 1891, it has an atmospheric fairy tale feel like many popular stories of the time. The subtle transformation of the monk Ambrosius from innocent monk to violent zealot is where Bierce really shines. When an innocent monk falls in love, his efforts to suppress his natural feelings result in a gradual descent toward calamity.

From the introduction to the 1967 edition, copyright by The George Macy Companies, scholar Maurice Valency writes:

“… his spiritual discomfort is enhanced by his heroic efforts to transcend the normal appetites of a young and healthy body. The consequence is a special sort of erotic frenzy, and a series of rationalizations which end in madness. Insofar as such a story is said to have a moral, it is plain: Nature is not to be denied. If we try to shut it out, it presents itself in another guise, and it becomes terrible…. Love comes to the monk Ambrosius with terrible urgency. Because his heart is pure, his passion is transformed into zeal; his jealousy becomes sacred; his revenge a vocation, and in death he finds his priesthood…. [He is]… the victim of an excess of goodness.”

The properties of Lovecraft’s mysterious meteorite are indeed curious. There is a long folkloric association of gelatinous masses associated with meteorites. For example, in reporting on a meteorite landing near Lowville, New York in 1846, Scientific American wrote, “It [the meteor] appeared larger than the sun, illumined with hemisphere nearly as light as day. A large company of the citizens immediately repaired to the spot [of the meteorite’s landing], and found a body of fetid jelly, four feet in diameter. (Source: The New Annotated H.P. Lovecraft, Leslie S Klinger, Editor; W.W. Norton & Co. 2014)

Ambrose Bierce also wrote of colors on a spectrum invisible to the naked eye in his short story, “The Damned Thing”.

For me, H.P. Lovecraft’s writing is like an indulgent dessert – it needs to be savored, and you need a clean palate in order to truly enjoy it. This is why I was drawn to him after such a lengthy run of Tarzan’s adventures. His writing, when taken in periodic doses, can elevate the intellect, while chills run down your neck. He pioneered the genre of cosmic horror, dealing with alien beings that do not follow our notion of physics, thus simultaneously lending them greater probability while making them more unfamiliar and terrifying.

When most people think of Jack London, they usually think of Alaska, the Klondike, and dog sleds. However, he wrote successfully in many genres including science fiction. Today’s story is the first half of a post apocalyptic novella written in 1915.

Now, as with most of the stories on the Podcast, today’s tale reflects the prejudices of London’s time in 1915. Not only are its attitudes towards “uncivilized” people offensive, but his outlook toward the poor and unprivileged is also disparaging. So let’s learn from the past and celebrate how far we’ve come.

Once again, thank you to those of you who have stepped up and become monthly supporters. You know, I started this podcast because I wanted to create an experience where people could enjoy a quality classic audiobook every week – even if they weren’t familiar with it. Over the years I have often heard from listeners who tell me that they have never heard of this author, or that story, and their lives are better for having experienced it. I find great joy and satisfaction in curating the stories, bringing them to life as best I can, and polishing off the audio to bring you a first class product every week. Thank you for supporting this service. Your monthly 5-dollar contribution really, really helps.

And the neat thing is, it goes both ways. My eyes have been opened to many incredible authors that I had never heard of before. Or if I did, I hadn’t read them. When I began, I was completely unfamiliar with P.G. Wodehouse, H.P. Lovecraft, G.K. Chesterton, Ambrose Bierce, Sheridan Le Fanu, and many others. I only discovered Maurice LeBlanc and his Arsene Lupin stories last year. So thank you for opening my eyes to a world hitherto hidden from me. The Classic Tales isn’t just a podcast. It’s Kickstarter, Audible, and public radio all in one. And you truly help to make it better than I could on my own. Three friends, one dog, one boat, one river. What could go wrong? Plenty. Even when the sailing is smooth, the stories never stop in Jerome K. Jerome’s comic novel. Plaster fishes, dead water rats, near death escapes and many, many jocose anecdotes create a colorful narrative of summertime life on the river. For, once three hypochondriacs self-diagnose themselves as “clearly overworked”, the rest practically writes itself.

So head on over to www.thebestaudiobooks.com and get the rest of the story – available now!

And Bonnie Discuillo from Dexter, Michigan says, “..the voices are so well done that I forget that I’m not listening to several actors… following Nicholas and his sister Kate as their lives are changed by the people they encounter.”

Kristina Bell of High Point, North Carolina says, “Harrison’s narrative made me feel like I was right in the scene with the characters.”

And Howard Taub of Woodinville, Washington calls it, “A masterpiece.”

Nicholas Nickleby is a tour de force in Victorian storytelling. Like many of Dickens’ stories, it starts off a bit sad, but once the ball gets rolling, it doesn’t stop. I love reading Dickens for many reasons, but part of my affinity for him is the actual scope of each book – the length. There are so many charming characters, and you get to live in their world for such a long time. By the time it is finished, you feel like you are saying goodbye to dear friends. Nicholas Nickleby Volume 1 of 2 is now available at www.thebestaudiobooks.com.

Today we begin a series from H.P. Lovecraft, and this is one of his best pieces. It’s about an expedition from Miskatonic University to Antarctica, and the remains of an ancient civilization, heretofore unknown to all the world. A healthy helping of Charles Dickens, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.

This week, we present a healthy portion of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, by Charles Dickens.

In Nicholas Nickleby, Charles Dickens created some of his most nefarious villains, and some of his most heroic characters. Wholly ignorant of the ways of the world, we follow Nicholas as he grapples with the villainous schoolmaster Wackford Squeers, the powerful and calculating Sir Mulberry Hawk, and the stonehearted moneylender Ralph Nickleby. As these three weave their webs of treachery, Nicholas stands tall, showing that even though he is sabotaged by those closest to him, he can prevail over the evil designs of the rich and powerful.

Today’s lengthy sample takes us to the Yorkshire school, which is arguably the darkest part of the book. Like so many similar epic quests, the triumphs wouldn’t be quite so triumphant if our hero doesn’t first trudge through the abyss.

The first volume of Nicholas runs over 17-1/2 hours, and contains over 70 different character voices. Order your copy today at thebestaudiobooks.com.

An impossible, motiveless murder commands a presence from beyond the grave to rise again.Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.

In Nicholas Nickelby, Charles Dickens created some of his most nefarious villains, and some of his most heroic characters. Wholly ignorant of the ways of the world, we follow Nicholas as he grapples with the villainous schoolmaster Wackford Squeers, the powerful and calculating Sir Mulberry Hawk, and the stonehearted moneylender Ralph Nickelby. As these three weave their webs of treachery, Nicholas stands tall, showing that even though he is sabotaged by those closest to him, he can prevail over the evil designs of the rich and powerful.

On Monday you can hear the first volume of Nicholas Nickelby. It runs over 17-1/2 hours, and contains over 70 different character voices. Preorder your copy today at thebestaudiobooks.com.

It has been brought to my attention, and I usually comment on these things, that there was a deal of anti-Semitic sentiment in last week’s episode. This is, unfortunately, one of the great drawbacks of producing these classic stories. They tend to demonstrate the prejudice of their time. Even in today’s story, Conan Doyle mentions some prejudices and judgments that are wholly antiquated and utterly false. Nobody should ever be prejudicially condemned, marginalized, or shamed. So when these things come up, let’s rejoice that now we know a better way.

Nestled deep in the wilds of Africa rests a secret temple to an unknown god. This shrine is the gateway to an unseen world of wonder, but is opened at a great price. Is a soul to be saved, or is a deity to be destroyed? John Buchan, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.

Nicholas Nickelby is coming along nicely, and I hope to release Volume 1 next week. The final audio, between the two volumes, will be around 36 hours long. This is a great example of how far your support for The Classic Tales Podcast goes. There is no way I could set aside the time to produce a book of this length without your assistance.

Nicholas Nickelby, like Dracula, is a book I’ve wanted to do since I started The Classic Tales Podcast, 7-1/2 years ago. Like David Copperfield, we weep with Nicholas in his despair, and rejoice in his triumphs. Now, after 7 years of honing my craft and building my studio, I’m please to present Nicholas Nickelby complete and unabridged. Preorder your copy and save.

Today’s story is by John Buchan, chiefly known for his spy novel The 39 Steps. Buchan was a prolific writer, and delved occasionally in weird fiction. This story struck me as particularly poignant today, where we seem to run into a lot of black and white thinking. Originally written in 1910, over 100 years ago, it raised a few questions I thought I had already answered.

What if, alongside Christmas, there was another holiday dedicated to an airing of grievances via pranking? Also, a special reading of Longfellow’s Christmas Bells, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.

You know what my favorite part of The Classic Tales Podcast is? It’s discovering new stories that I would probably never have come across, written by some of the greatest minds in history. Thank you for sending your recommendations over the years, and pointing the way to new stories and new authors heretofore unknown to me. We all benefit when we share.

I’d also like to say thank you to all of the financial supporters who help to ensure that I can keep The Classic Tales Podcast up and running. Your monthly $5 contributions help pay the bills, and help to ensure that The Classic Tales Podcast continues to lead others to these treasures of the past. Thank you.

Today we have two presentations. The first is a short story by Saki, which explores the idea of having another, more vindictive holiday alongside Christmas. The second piece is Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s Christmas Bells. This is a reading I did for a new podcast called Verses in Vox. They add original music and sound effects to poetry readings in an effort to bring out the full drama of each poem. I think it turned out very well. I hope you like it.

Stephen Leacock was a Canadian writer and humorist. Today’s story was written in 1914, as the world was reacting to the impact of World War I. It is incredible to me how many things the author points out that we are still complaining about and longing for – 100 years later.
