When Peter, a rich and spoiled youngster, decides to take an ugly mongrel home, he is thrilled when his parents concede to his juvenile wishes. But when the dog realizes that he’s likely to be shot inside of two weeks, he scrambles to somehow become indispensable. P.G. Wodehouse, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

Today’s story is one of two Wodehouse stories that feature an ugly mongrel as the hero from the collection of stories: The Man With Two Left Feet. I love stories told from a unique point of view, and a Wodehousian dog really fit the bill.

Livestock, plants and even dead wood succumb to the mysterious ailment that came from the stars. The inhabitants of the farmhouse are going mad, and one is missing. Is this the judgment of God, or simply stardust? H.P. Lovecraft, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

The properties of Lovecraft’s mysterious meteorite are indeed curious. There is a long folkloric association of gelatinous masses associated with meteorites. For example, in reporting on a meteorite landing near Lowville, New York in 1846, Scientific American wrote, “It [the meteor] appeared larger than the sun, illumined with hemisphere nearly as light as day. A large company of the citizens immediately repaired to the spot [of the meteorite’s landing], and found a body of fetid jelly, four feet in diameter. (Source: The New Annotated H.P. Lovecraft, Leslie S Klinger, Editor; W.W. Norton & Co. 2014)

Ambrose Bierce also wrote of colors on a spectrum invisible to the naked eye in his short story, “The Damned Thing”.

After a meteorite strikes near a farmhouse outside of Arkham, strange things begin to happen. While the scientifically minded speak of discovering a new element, locals sense something more sinister is in the air. H.P. Lovecraft, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

For me, H.P. Lovecraft’s writing is like an indulgent dessert – it needs to be savored, and you need a clean palate in order to truly enjoy it. This is why I was drawn to him after such a lengthy run of Tarzan’s adventures. His writing, when taken in periodic doses, can elevate the intellect, while chills run down your neck. He pioneered the genre of cosmic horror, dealing with alien beings that do not follow our notion of physics, thus simultaneously lending them greater probability while making them more unfamiliar and terrifying.
